Informing Virginians about Forestry and Natural Resources

LEAF also supports undergraduate research. LEAF technicians are required to complete a project that will benefit the LEAF program in terms of education and outreach. Three projects were conducted during the summer of 2008. Two occurred at Montpelier and the other at the Powell River Project. Montpelier projects included: 1) comparing soil carbon and nitrogen levels between the old-growth Landmark Forest and a much younger second-growth stand on abandoned agricultural land; and 2) surveying Montpelier visitors about their interest and willingness to participate in sustainable forestry education. The Powell River Project compared tree regeneration and herbaceous cover between burned and unburned forestland. Summaries of the research projects are available for download. Documents are in pdf format; download the Adobe Reader.
